About Us

The UBC-Geophysical Inversion Facility (UBC-GIF) is an academic research unit within the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Our research group is comprised of professors, graduate students, researchers and software developers; see people.

For over 30 years, our research group has made major contributions towards the development of forward modeling and inversion algorithms for potential field and electromagnetic data. More recently, we have begun exploring the application of data science and machine learning methodologies to geophysical problems. Visit our research page for a comprehensive description of past and current research projects.

Research at the UBC-GIF is supported primarily by consortium funding arrangements with NSERC, exploration and engineering companies, and other agencies. Funding is used to support graduate student research, create software and develop educational resources; see our program.
